Indications emerged on Thursday that the Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Godwin Emefiele might be the replacement for the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Checks revealed that the Zenith Bank MD’s name was forwarded to the Senate for confirmation on Thursday, following the suspension of Malam Lamido Sanusi.
The presidency has also nominated Adelabu Adekoya, an Executive Director of First Bank as the Deputy Governor of the CBN.
A deputy governor of the country’s apex bank, Sarah Alade is to oversee the CBN in acting capacity, pending the appointment of a substantive governor.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has been ordered to proceed on suspension. Sanusi, a prince of the Kano Emirate had been at loggerheads with his employers for some time.
Sanusi had appeared before a senate committee recently to defend his claims that $ 20 billion out of the money that should have accrued to the Federal Government from the sales of petroleum was missing. The CBN Governor had stoically maintained his stand despite the explanation offered by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Sanusi’s suspension which comes less than 100 days to the expiration of his tenure was contained in a statement issued on Thursday.
But in chat with SaharaTV shortly after his suspension, Sanusi vowed to challenge his suspension in court soon.
