Ecuador were denied an early goal against hosts, Qatar in the opening game of the 2022 World Cup due to a tight offside call.

Enner Valencia thought he had put the South Americans in front in the fourth minute.

Valencia headed in from close range after Qatar goalkeeper, Saad Al Sheeb was caught out of position.

However, after a lengthy review from the VAR team, the goal was chalked off, much to the bemusement of players and viewers.

Fans were also left confused as no explanation was given at the time.

But subsequent replays showed Michael Estrada’s foot and knee were marginally offside in the build up.

Felix Torres challenged Al Sheeb, but the ball fell to Estrada, who headed the ball towards Torres, whose overhead kick across goal was met by Valenci.
