No fewer than 186 people have been murdered on the streets of Lagos in eleven months, State Commissioner of police, Edgar Imohimi disclosed on Wednesday.
The figure represents an average of approximately 17 people murdered monthly between November 2017 and September 2018, the period the report covered.
Imohimi, who spoke at the 12th Annual Town Hall meeting on Security with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the Civic Centre on Wednesday, added that there were 43 suicide and attempted suicide cases in 11 months in Lagos.
Also, he revealed that 290 armed robbers and nine kidnappers were arrested during the period under review, adding that 233 armed robbery cases were foiled.
Imohimi lamented that 14 armed robbery cases were successfully carried out, with one police officer killed in shootout with robbers, while 18 armed robbers were gunned down.
According to Imohimi, 37 vehicles were recovered from armed robbers, eight snatched, 23 vehicles were removed from parks across the state, while attributing the reduction in the crime rate to community policing strategy.
“Though, 233 armed robbery cases were foiled by the police but the police couldn’t prevent 14 cases leading to one officer being killed by the robbers during confrontation within the period. Also, while 37 vehicles were recovered from armed robbers, eight snatched, 23 vehicles were removed from parks across the state,” he disclosed.
The police boss further revealed that 701 arms and ammunition were recovered from robbers within the period under review, disclosing that 669 cultist were arrested while 911 others renounced their membership of the groups across the state.
